When we think of modern parks, housing estates or recreational areas, we usually picture places designed with people in mind. Activity zones, playgrounds, relaxation areas and green spaces are intended to encourage physical activity, socialising and relationship-building. However, the modern city is not just a space for residents. It is also a place where our four-legged companions are present every day.
At Vinci Play, we have been designing spaces that foster activity, socialisation and the daily discovery of the world for years. We create places that meet the needs of children, young people and adults. It was therefore a natural step to broaden our perspective and recognise the needs of those who are an integral part of many families and local communities.
This is how the WOOF series came into being.
Dogs are also users of public spaces
Just a dozen or so years ago, dog runs were a rarity. Today, more and more local authorities, designers and managers of public spaces recognise that a well-designed space should take into account the needs of all its users.
Just as playgrounds support children’s development through physical activity, exploring their surroundings and social interaction, so too do properly designed dog runs help dogs develop their physical fitness, build self-confidence and learn to interact with other animals.
This approach is in line with the concept of modern public space design, in which relationships, activity and the quality of users’ everyday lives are just as important as the facilities themselves. Well-designed recreational spaces do not serve just one group of users. They build local communities and encourage people to spend time together.
What is the WOOF range?
WOOF is a range of equipment designed specifically for dogs. These solutions enable the creation of attractive and functional dog runs in city parks, housing estates and recreational areas alike.
The WOOF series equipment enables activities inspired by agility training. Thanks to it, dogs can:
• practise their balance,
• develop their motor coordination,
• improve their agility,
• build their confidence,
• learn new skills,
• burn off energy safely.
Importantly, activities on these equipment pieces engage not only the body but also the dog’s mind. Navigating obstacles requires concentration, decision-making and cooperation with the owner.
A meeting place, not just a training ground
A dog park is much more than just a set of facilities.
Just as playgrounds become local meeting places for residents, dog parks fulfil an important social function. They are places where dog owners meet, share experiences, make friends and build neighbourly relationships.
For the animals themselves, it is an opportunity to learn appropriate social behaviour and how to interact safely with other dogs. Regular socialisation helps reduce stress, boosts confidence and has a positive impact on the dogs’ day-to-day lives.
That is precisely why we view the WOOF range not merely as a collection of individual products. We see it as a tool for creating valuable communal spaces.
Responding to the changing needs of cities
Modern cities and neighbourhoods are constantly changing. We are placing ever greater emphasis on quality of life, mental health, physical activity and social integration.
Just as the importance of green spaces, natural playgrounds and recreational areas is growing, so too is the role played by infrastructure designed for pet owners.
We recognise this trend and wish to play an active part in its development. The WOOF series is a response to the needs of communities seeking a comprehensive approach to the design of public spaces – spaces that cater not only for people, but also for their everyday companions.
WOOF in Gdynia
One of the latest projects utilising the WOOF series of equipment is a dog run created in one of Gdynia’s parks.
This is yet another example of a project demonstrating that public spaces can effectively meet the diverse needs of residents and create the conditions for them to spend time actively with their pets.
The equipment from our range was captured on camera by Marcin Mielewski, showing how naturally it blends into the green surroundings and how effectively it supports dogs’ daily activity.
We design for the community
At Vinci Play, we believe that the best spaces are created when designers are able to recognise the needs of all users.
That is why we are expanding our range not only in the areas of playgrounds, leisure zones and sports facilities, but also in infrastructure dedicated to animals. The WOOF series embodies this approach.
Because a well-designed space is one where everyone can find their place. Children discover the world through play, adults build relationships, and dogs can fulfil their natural needs for exercise, exploration and social interaction.
These are exactly the kinds of places we want to create. Together with people. And for their best friends.
